Chief Executive and Senior Management team
Charlie leads the senior management team who are responsible for what the GMC does day-to-day. The Chief Executive is also the Registrar, in which role Charlie has various functions specifically assigned in legislation.
He builds on the key reforms we've delivered, including:
Charlie joined the GMC from his Director General role at the Department of Health England. Before that, Charlie was Director for Ageing Society and State Pensions at the Department for Work and Pensions.
He has also worked in a variety of roles across government and the wider public sector. During this time Charlie has led:
Shaun leads the GMC's work to understand and respond to developments in the external environment. This includes leading strategy and policy work, and data, research and insight capabilities.
Shaun joined the GMC in December 2020, having had over 25 years’ experience in central Government, most recently as Director-General in Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs leading its Europe and International work. He also worked as Director, Access to Justice in the Ministry of Justice, and prior to that, over 20 years in the Department of Health and Social Care. He was DHSC’s Director-General, Social Care, Local Government and Care Partnerships, with responsibility for social care policy, relationships with local government on the health and care agenda, and the set-up of patient champion organisation Healthwatch England. Before that he held a range of roles in health and care policy, including Director of Policy for the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, heading the office of the NHS Chief Executive, and private secretary to the Secretary of State for Health.
Una leads all aspects of registration and revalidation work. This includes policy, implementation and operational delivery.
Una joined the Senior Management team in 2010. Before that, she was Assistant Director of Revalidation from 2007 and Head of Policy and Planning in the Fitness to Practise directorate between 2002 and 2007. Before joining us, Una worked at the Legal Services Commission for eight years.
Colin leads the regulatory duties for all stages of medical education. This includes advising doctors on professional conduct, performance and medical ethics.
Colin joined in 2017 having previously held senior leadership roles in medical education at Lancaster Medical School, Warwick Medical School, Hull York Medical School, and North Yorkshire East Coast Foundation School.
Colin is also a registered doctor, and previously a consultant in intensive care medicine and Medical Director at Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Services.
In June 2018 Colin was awarded Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators and made Honorary Professor in Medical Education at Manchester University.
Anthony leads all work delivering statutory function of ensuring doctors are fit to practise. This includes an extensive reform programme and all in-house legal services.
Anthony joined as an in-house solicitor in 2003. He went on to become a Principal Legal Adviser and then Assistant Director responsible for our Legal Services team in 2008. During this time he developed and expanded our full service in-house legal team.
He took on the extra role of Employer Liaison Service Assistant Director in 2011. This led to the successful roll out of the service across the UK.
Anthony became Director of Fitness to Practise directorate in 2013. And in 2015 he was appointed as General Counsel. In this role, Anthony acts as senior legal adviser to Council and the Chief Executive.
Anthony leads our programme of work to enable doctors provide safe care and is the senior management team sponsor for our BME staff network and the Scottish Government.
Before joining, Anthony worked in public service. He worked for the then Department of Health and Social Security and the Crown Prosecution Service. Anthony is also a solicitor.
Paul leads the effective use of communication and engagement channels, to make sure we provide clear, concise and relevant information to audiences.
Paul joined in 2018 from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, where he worked as Director of Public Affairs and Research. Previously, Paul was Director of Corporate Affairs at the UK Pension Protection Fund, and worked as Senior Communications Manager at the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) for five years.
He started his career as a civil servant with the Benefits Agency and then the Department for Social Security, where his roles included Policy Manager and Private Secretary to the Secretary of State.
Neil joined as Director of Resources in 2003. Before that Neil worked in the commercial aerospace and defence sectors. He is a chartered management accountant.
